Coastal Automotive signs licensing agreement with Dow Chemical for automotive foam

Rochester Hills-based Coastal Automotive LLC said Tuesday it signed a licensing agreement with the automotive division of The Dow Chemical Co. for automotive foam technology.

Coastal will manufacture Dow’s sound mitigation polymer foam technology and supply it to its automotive customers, the company said in a press release.

The foam, Betafoam AFI, is placed into vehicle cavities, such as rocker panels and support pillars, and expands up to 3,000 percent during a heating process. The foam dampens external road and engine noise.

The foam will be used in two products — full-flow and extruded.

Coastal will take the product to market in the second quarter of 2015.
